How to Start A Photography Business: Getting an EIN

What is an EIN?

An EIN is an Employer Idendentification Number that’s assigned to businesses by the IRS.

Why do you need an EIN?

There are multiple reasons you’d need an EIN. A few are:

  • Filing taxes (if you’re a Sole Proprietorship, you use your SSN)
  • Opening a business bank account
  • Hiring employees (this does not include contractors, which you 1099 at tax season)

There are other reasons, but these are the most common.

Where do you file for an EIN?

You can file for an EIN on the IRS website. It only takes a few minutes, so it’s smart to do the same day you form your business with your state’s Secretary of State.

What do you need to file an EIN?

You’ll need your business ID number (which will be on your Articles of Incorporation), your personal information, and other business information that you used to form your LLC or other business structure.

Forming a business and getting all the details in order might seem intimidating, but it’s something you only have to do once.
