How to Start a Photography Business: Define Your Why
What is your “why” behind starting a photography business?
Your “why” should be the first question you ask when considering making the jump into entrepreneurship. You may think, “I want to make money and photography seems like an easy and enjoyable job,” but that won’t always be enough to carry you through burnout. You need a little more substance behind your decision for when things get hard.

Why People Start Photography Businesses
There are many reasons people start photography businesses. A few are:
- A passion for the art (this is a good start)
- A love for working with people while creating art (a little better)
- The ability to control ones schedule
- Being able to spend more time with one’s family
No matter what your why is, make sure that it’s strong enough to help you through the hard times. The times when your business bank account is running a little low, and inquiries are slow. The times when you’re too busy with work that it feels hard to breathe. (Yes, both of these can happen.)
Make sure whatever “your why” is, it’ll help you through the thick and thin of running a business.
Next, we’ll be talking about the first technical aspect of starting a photography business: choosing your business name.
